Leo Michael Haid wurde 1849 als Sohn deutscher Einwanderer im schatten der Benediktinerabtei St. Vincent in Pennsylvania geboren, deren Schule er besuchte. 1868 trat er in das Noviziat ein, legte 1869 die Profess ab. Nach der Priesterweihe 1874 war er als Lehrer und Geistlicher am Kolleg der Abtei tätig.
1885 wurde er der erste Abt der neugegründeten Abtei Belmont (Maria, Hilfe der Christen) im damaligen Garibaldi, North Carolina. 1886 begründete er dort das Seminar und das Belmont Abbey College.
1888 zum Apostilischen Vikar von North Carolina ernannt, wurde er von Erzbischof Kardinal James Gibbons von Baltimore zum Bischof geweiht. 1910 errichtete Papst Pius X. die Territorialabtei Belmont und ernannte Leo haid zum Abbas nullius (Territorialabt).
Leo Hid starb 1924 in Bbelmont und wurde auf dem Klosterfriedhof beigesetzt.
